This is my first Star Trek convention. There were high, medium and low points to the 3 day event.
The opening ceremony was a huge disappointment for me. I was expecting something similar to the Celebration Star Wars - which i missed out on. I was expecting it to bring on the actors and guests, along with announcements about the upcoming TV series and maybe the odd surprise.
It was supposed to start at 7pm, but they decided to only START allowing people in at this time, despite the fact nothing was on before it, and people had been queuing for nearly an hour. I was in the plebs queue, so we were the last group to go in, and as a result we would be near the back. I was lucky (or unlucky, as i had to queue for it) to be right near the front of the queue. As a result, i got a seat fairly near the front of the plebs section.
Our host for the evening was Greg Grunberg, who did an AMAZING job of host. He kept it all together and had great passion for Star Trek, and it showed. He was clear and got the crowd warmed up. Then William Shatner came on stage. Great, we may get some cool stuff here. However, i think he was on the stage for no longer than 2 mins, and some of that was clapping. Then the next actor came on stage and had his 2 minutes, then was replaced by another - and this continued to happen until everyone was finished.
There were a couple of surprises. These were in the guise of Guinness World Record presentations. This was good, but far too late in the ceremony to make much of an impact. The big highlight for me was when Wil Wheaton came on stage. I was under the impression that he was not attending on the Friday, so to see him on stage was a surprise.
Most of the Actors seemed drunk, but it was getting late and they were given it by the gallons - so i can not blame them.
As i stated up front, this was a disappointment. I was expecting something a little more than what we got. I would be seeing most of these during the show, and paying £25 for a quick procession of them was not good. It was another case of fleecing the fans by the organisers of the event (very little respect for the company - the volunteers did a great job with what they were given). I will go to a Star Trek convention again, i will NOT go to the opening ceremony again.
